RIS3 in macro-regional strategies: tools to design and monitor integrated territorial development paths

Margherita Russo, Francesco Pagliacci, Pasquale Pavone and Anna Giorgi

A new assessment on RIS3 in macro-regional strategies and the importance of combining quantitative and qualitative analyses, developed by a research team within the framework of the Action Group 1 – To develop an effective Research and Innovation ecosystem, has been included within the latest ESPON Scientific Report.

The scientific paper, in line with the objectives of the Interreg Alpine Space project – AlpGov summarizes the analysis carried out by the research team led by Prof. Margherita Russo, delegate of the Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research (MIUR) in the AG1 -  Universitą degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia  and Prof. Anna Giorgi, Leader of the Action Group 1, Delegate of Lombardy Region – UNIMONT, Universitą degli Studi di Milano with the collaboration of Francesco Pagliacci and Pasquale Pavone – Universitą degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia.
The paper combines multidimensional analysis of the characteristics of EU macro-regions with a comparative, qualitative perspective on priorities outlined in regional innovation strategies. It shows that bottom-up strategies for regions can support integrated approaches, and that the RIS3 database in particular can help with the successful design and implementation of policies.
Within this framework the research team has previously developed and published an online interactive tool , meant to be useful to policy makers, stakeholders, researchers and the general public in the Alpine Macro-Region, that allows users to explore the current state of diversification across regions and the potential complementarities and synergies to be developed.
